After disagreeing with the municipality on issues related to nepotism and poor service delivery, residents of Makeleketla, Winburg in the Free State took their anger to the N1 road and barricade it with burning tyres and stones yesterday.

This, as a result of alleged empty promises made by the Masilonyana local municipality, that residents would be employed in the N1 road maintenance project.

Some residents had allegedly been shot with rubber bullets, as they were stoning the passing vehicles and trucks. Some residents told OFM News that police should take full responsibility for their injuries after shooting at them.

Speaking to some of the residents who didn't want to be named for the sake of their safety, they revealed that the road will be closed until the municipality takes their concerns into consideration.

"We're here fighting for our rights as we also want to be employed and put bread on a table at the end of the day," says a resident.

They further stated that they'll keep on barricading the road and ensure that no one in the municipality is going to work until their grievances have been positively attended.

In addition, some of the foreigner tuck shops have also been looted during this protest. However, conditions are currently calm, but residents were planning to continue with the protest.

OFM News' attempts to reach mayor Steve Koalane have thus far unsuccessful.

However, police spokesperson Molefi Modipa confirmed that some residents have been shot and that investigations are underway.
