NW Health to discuss NHI with residents─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:00 Sun, 20 Oct 2019
The North West Department of Health is set to embark on rigorous stakeholders consultations, regarding the controversial National Health Insurance (NHI) meetings this week.
MEC Madoda Sambatha, in these meetings, will also meet with community leaders, health professionals, Trade Unions and community organisations.
He says meetings or dialogues over the NHI that has created a massive debate across the country, will look into ways of improving the health care systems in a province with so many health care challenges.
These consultative meetings follow after the minister of Health, Zweli Mkhezi, tabled his plans around the implementation of the NHI in South Africa. Tomorrow (Monday) Samabatha will visit the Moses Kotane Hospital where Individuals will be allowed to comment on the bill and share their views on NHI.
The bill aims to contain the cost of comprehensive public health care by prioritising primary and preventative medical services. The bill is the first piece of legislation towards realising the government's plan for universal health care, and aims to ensure that all those who qualify to receive free health care of a professional standard within a reasonable time.
The proposed new law introduces a "gatekeeping" mechanism on referrals to specialist care and is accompanied by a memorandum setting out a timeline for a phased implementation process.
