NW police issue stern warning to Bloemhof residents─── LUCKY NKUYANE 05:17 Mon, 21 Oct 2019
A stern warning has been issued to residents of Boitumelong near Bloemhof outside Wolmaransstad in the North West following threats of a possible shutdown on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says a letter circulating on social media indicate that the planned stay-away is in solidarity with 16 people who were arrested in that area.
He says these individuals are a part of a larger group of 22 people who were arrested between Monday 30 September and 10 October 2019 for crimes such as kidnapping, assault, and murders which were committed earlier this year during violent protests in that area.
He adds that as such, residents are advised to respect the rule of law and not to participate in actions that are destined to undermine and challenge the authority of the state.
Mokgwabone says the police will not tolerate any criminality or action intended to cause destruction of property and the disruption of basic services and schooling in that area.
He adds that this had caused great concern to the South African Police Service in the province. Mokgwabone says members of the community are urged to ignore the letter - which does not have the details of the writer, as it is meant to cause unnecessary fear.
He says the use of social media platforms to encourage, incite and mobilise others to commit a crime is discouraged.
