Fraud trial date set for former NW MEC, HOD─── LUCKY NKUYANE 09:37 Tue, 22 Oct 2019
The trial date has been set for the fraud case against the former MEC Wendy Nelson and Head of Health Department Thabo Lekalakala.
The duo on Monday appeared in the North West High Court after the Mmabatho Regional Court had transferred their matter to a higher court level in September 2019.
The provincial Hawks spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, says the matter between the State, Nelson, and Lekalakala has been postponed to 3 - 6 February 2020 for trial at the Mahikeng High Court. Rikhotso previously told OFM News that the pair is facing charges of fraud following Lekalakala's alleged irregular appointment as the head of the department in 2014. Meanwhile, the departmental spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, says Lakalakala is currently undergoing a disciplinary process.
His disciplinary proceedings follow allegations of procurement irregularities involving the payment of R30 million to the Gupta-linked Mediosa Company and the misrepresentation of facts after he stated he had worked as a chief director of the department. Nelson and Lekalakala are out on bail of R20 000 each after they were both released in August, following a short court appearance in the regional court.
