This, after the municipality last week had its council dissolved and placed under administration following reports of failure to provide basic services, fill vacant posts and collect revenue, amongst its other responsibilities.

The Premier’s spokesperson, Vuyisile Ngesi, said the municipality was troubled with the council unable to reach any agreements. It falls under the infamous Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, which forms part of four North West municipalities that invested R314 million with the now-liquidated VBS Mutual Bank. More than half of municipalities in the province are under the care of the provincial government.

The announcement by the provincial government will come just days after the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces’ (NCOP) Select Committee on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, China Dodovu, has expressed his concerns over the state of municipalities and called for criminal charges against municipal officials who misuse public funds.
