NW municipality reacts to school drought─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:12 Thu, 31 Oct 2019
The JB Marks Municipality, which includes Potchefstroom in the North West, says plans are in place to address the water issue at Keotshepile Primary School, which is said to have been without water for the past two weeks.
The municipal spokesperson, Willie Maphosa, says the municipality is using a water tanker truck to deliver water to the school. He says the issue has been resolved overall but what remains critical at this point is that the school is in a high-lying area and it will take time for the school to start receiving water.
The DA councillor in that area, Johan Zerwick, earlier threatened to lay a complaint with the South African Human Right Commission (SAHRC) if the matter remains unsolved. Maphosa, however, says the municipality is in talks with the Department of Education in the province to come on board and help alleviate the situation.
Zerwick said 1200 learners are forced to attend school without water and no-one is willing to assist in resolving this. He said the school principal raised a complaint with the party last week and upon their immediate response to get the municipality to attend to the matter, the call fell on deaf ears. Recently, residents of Khuma raised their concerns on social media about the Nkululekweni Primary School that has been without water and electricity for more than a year now.
