Sol Plaatje Municipality expected to explain water crisis─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 09:13 Mon, 04 Nov 2019
The Executive Mayor of the troubled Sol Plaatje Municipality in the Northern Cape is today expected to meet with the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nocci) over water and sanitation problems faced in Kimberley and surrounding areas.
The Chamber’s CEO Sharon Steyn says the situation in Kimberley is dire and is affecting the success of businesses in the area. She told OFM News that she requested to have a meeting with the management of the municipality particularly over the water crisis that the city has been experiencing since October.
Steyn says water cuts in the city often leads many entrepreneurs with no choice but to let staff go home and close their doors. She says this overall has a huge negative impact on the financial state of many businesses.
Steyn has called on all business owners in the area of Kimberley to attend the meeting set to take place from 12pm at the Horseshoe Inn.
The chamber’s meeting with the municipality comes at a time the country is still reeling from increased unemployment rates.
Statistician-general, Risenga Maluleke, last week revealed that the number of unemployed South Africans remains staggeringly high at 29.1% with 6.7 million people actively looking for employment, remaining jobless.
