Miners’ safety and salaries in the spotlight─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:50 Sun, 08 Dec 2019
The lack of safety for mineworkers across the country once again came in the spotlight, following the death of four miners at the Tau Lekoa Mine in Orkney in the North West.
This, after five workers were trapped after a rockfall at the mine on Friday. Following the news of the miners' passing, civil organisations and social media users have conveyed their condolences and raised concerns over the lack of safety for mineworkers. The concerns raised comes at the backdrop of another similar incident that happened in 2017, where four miners' bodies were recovered after being trapped following a rockfall at the mine.
Meanwhile, the National Union of Mineworkers has issued a statement raising concerns regarding what they allege to be the employer’s failure to “follow proper safety procedures in pursuit of beating production targets”. Coupled with this, the union has raised concerns over the remuneration of miners, in general, stating that they should be paid more money.
OFM News previously reported that NUM regional secretary, Masibulele Naki, confirmed that of the five miners who were trapped, the proto teams have only managed to rescue one with injuries. The fourth and final mineworker was this morning brought to the surface but was, however, declared dead.
