Firearm and ammunition recovered from river in Virginia, FS | News Article

The Free State police diving unit recovered a firearm and ammunition from the Sands River in Virginia in the Free State.

Police made the discovery during a dive sweep operation aimed at searching for illegal items thrown in rivers. The police say a thorough investigation will be conducted after the discovery of the items.

This comes after the firearms amnesty period kicked off on the 1st of December this year which is expected to conclude on 31 May 2020. This means that firearms can be handed over at police stations from 7:00 am until 17:00 pm each day. All firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they have been used in the commission of any crime.

This period also allows gun owners with expired licenses to apply for new licenses. Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, on a statement released on Friday, 13 December 2019, encouraged all South Africans who are in possession of illegal or unwanted firearms to hand them over at their nearest police station.

So far over 200 firearms and 2000 rounds of ammunition have been surrendered since the start of the amnesty period.
