FS has high number of guns and ammunition surrendered so far─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:10 Sat, 14 Dec 2019
Free State police stations have the highest numbesr of firearms and rounds of ammunition surrendered so far since the start of the firearms amnesty period earlier at the beginning of this month
This is according to the police ministry spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba. She told OFM News that although she cannot provide the exact figures of guns and ammunition that have been handed over to stations across the province, she could confirm that the province has the highest yet surrendered.
She adds stations across the county have received over 200 firearms and 2000 rounds of ammunition thus far.
The Police in the province recently told OFM News that their doors remain open to receive unwanted or illegal fire-arms from residents in the province.
The Bainslvei Acting Station Commander, Martin Buffett, said legislation requires anyone who has such a firearm to hand it over for the preparation of its destruction.
He said this is in line with the police management's intention and hopes to keep the streets of the province safe. He added that this follows after national police minister, Bheki Cele, and the National Assembly earmarked 1 December to 31 May 2020 as an amnesty period.
Buffett said the country has a highly significant number of unlicensed or illegal firearms circulating in the streets.
