Moqhaka infrastructure in spotlight | News Article

The Moqhaka Local Municipality in the Free State apologises to its residents over sewage spillages in Kroonstad. Spokesperson, Dika Kheswa, says this is a result of blocked sewerage pipes and they are attending to it.

He says the municipality has discovered that foreign objects such as stones, diapers, and plastics are the main contributors to sewerage blockages and appeals to communities to help protect the municipality’s infrastructure and to refrain from throwing foreign objects in drains. The municipality, which also battles with water provision, is next week expected to come in the spotlight when the MEC for Finance, Gadija Brown, outlines her plans for municipalities during the provincial budget speech.

Premier Sisi Ntombela, in the State of the Province Address (Sopa) earlier this week, confirmed that the ailing state of municipalities and local governance in the province is amongst her top priorities. She alluded that the water crisis and other service delivery issues experienced in many municipalities are receiving her utmost attention.

Following Ntombela’s commitments, Brown is in her budget speech expected to detail how her department is going to allocate funds for infrastructure development, how they are going to address the debacle experienced by municipalities and other challenges faced in the province.
