A Gauteng police officer and his accomplice were granted R500 bail each after being charged with attempted murder, amongst other charges, by the Brits Magistrates’ Court in North West on Monday.

They will both appear in court again on 21 April 2020. This is after the duo, Simon Ndambi (45) and Dipuo Mokwena, allegedly kidnapped a 27-year-old man at his home. The two allegedly demanded a ransom for his release later.

The victim’s father reported the matter to the police, who on the same day accompanied him to the arranged place for the drop-off of the money. Upon arrival, Ndambi was waiting in his vehicle. He was confronted by the police and he ran away to hide inside a security guard room. He then fired shots at the police, who responded by returning fire. No injuries were sustained. He was arrested and both his vehicle and firearm were seized. Myburgh says Ndambi works for the SAPS in the Gauteng province. He has consequently been suspended.

The police then proceeded to a farm where the victim was kept and upon arrival, another 26-year-old victim was found handcuffed with cable ties. They were both rescued and taken to a local hospital for the treatment of assault injuries. It is alleged the second victim’s sister was also contacted and instructed to deposit money into the victim’s account.

Accused number two, Mokwena, was arrested at Rooikoppies near Brits in possession of a bakkie allegedly belonging to the victim.
