#Coronavirus: NC tally reaches five | News Article

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Northern Cape has now risen to five in the latest figures released by Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize.

The first two confirmed cases in this province came from Hartswater, where a couple tested positive after attending a church gathering in Bloemfontein in the Free State. Another case is that of an SABC reporter - stationed at its Kimberley office - who tested positive after coming into contact with two German tourists.

OFM News' correspondent in Upington, Roderick Titus, reported that officials, which include a team of doctors and nurses, were set to visit a hotel where the journalist and tourists have stayed.

The SABC spokesperson, Mmoni Seapolelo, says as a precautionary measure, they have suspended the operations in their Kimberley office and all employees are in self-isolation.

She says the employee concerned is doing well and his condition is being monitored.

"Our Bloemfontein office has been designated to provide business continuity support for Kimberley until the situation stabilises. Unfortunately, we are unable to comment on the issues regarding the staff of the hotel in question,” she adds.

OFM News reported that well-known writer and evangelist, Angus Buchan, and leader of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Kenneth Meshoe, both stated that they tested positive after attending the gathering.

The number of those infected in the country now stands at 1 187.
