Criminals targeting schools should be tried and convicted: PSA─── MARVIN NTSANE 07:13 Wed, 15 Apr 2020
The Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) says criminals arrested for burglaries and vandalism of schools should receive harsh sentences.
This follows a spate of criminal activities at more than 180 schools across the country during the COVID-19 lockdown. The association says courts should send a strong message to criminals targeting schools.
The PSA further say it is unfortunate that learners and teachers are going to be negatively impacted by this. The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, should increase security in the schools at high risk areas, the PSA added in a statement.
The association further called on communities to identify criminals and report them to the authorities.
"The country already has challenges to access education limited by numerous factors, including overcrowding, lack of learning material, running water and toilets, to mention a few. Targeting schools cannot be tolerated as it further disadvantages vulnerable communities meant to educate children that can assist to alleviate poverty," the PSA says.
