#Coronavirus: NC residents to appear in court following protest─── MARVIN NTSANE 11:14 Mon, 04 May 2020
A total of eighteen suspects aged between twenty five and sixty one are expected to appear in the Fraserburg Magistrates Court in the Northern Cape today for malicious damage to property, housebreaking and theft.
They also face charges related to the contravention of the Disaster Management Act. Provincial police spokesperson, Mohale Ramatseba says this followed after a protest occurred in Fraserburg this past weekend.
He says the residents allegedly demanded to be sold liquor and cigarettes. He adds that the crowd went on to loot one of the tuckshops.
He says groceries worth about R100 000 was stolen in the process. Ramatseba also says the police were pelted with stones while trying to disperse the crowd.
He adds one police officer's hand was broken and a police bakkie's windows were damaged.
Police investigations continue.
