NW police warn against vandalism of schools─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:23 Sun, 10 May 2020
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, has sent a stern warning against burglaries and vandalism of schools in the province.
This, after the case against 42-year-old Seth Maroke, accused of stealing steel palisades from a primary school in the Motlhabaneng section in Makapanstad, has been postponed to September 15.
Maroke appeared in the Moretele Magistrate's Court on Friday after he was arrested in possession of the suspected stolen items.
Police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says Maroke has been released on bail until his second court appearance in September and investigations continue.
Meanwhile, Kwena has reiterated calls to members of the public to report suspicious activities at schools by contacting their nearest police station.
His appeal comes as the number of schools across the country that have been vandalised and broken into since the beginning of the lockdown is now over 960.
Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, in her last media briefing regarding the department's plans over the Covid-19 pandemic, announced that administration blocks, laboratories and ICT equipment were targeted in all of the incidents.
She further announced that all these schools will need to be attended to before they re-open.
