FS water storage shows slight improvement in stats─── LEATILE LEIEE 10:26 Sat, 16 May 2020
The state of water storage capacity in the Free State has slightly improved from last week's 83% to 83.8%.
This, according to the weekly dam levels report issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation. The increase has come as a relief to most communities in the province as the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus is gaining momentum not just in the country but across the globe.
The Department concluded that water has become a scarcity, therefore water conservation efforts need to be tightened to save the current water as we move towards the winter season.
The Bloemfontein Water Supply System - with four dams supplying water to Mangaung and surrounding areas - slightly increased to 56% this week from 55.6% last week. This is still however considerably lower than the 64.5% during the same period last year.
In Mangaung Groothoek dam is at 65%, followed by Rustfontein at 33.3%, Welbedacht at 95.1% and Knellpoort at 65.8%.
Fika Patso Dam in Phuthaditjhaba, on the Namahadi River, is at 45.7% - a slight increase compared to last week's 45.3%.
Sterkfontein Dam rose marginally to 93.5% this week compared to last week's 79.8%. Krugersdrift Dam is at full capacity at 101.3% - slightly down from the 102.4% a week ago.
Gariep Dam is at 98.8% capacity, while Vanderkloof Dam, is at 82.8% - up from 77.4% last week.
