#CoronavirusNW: Cuban doctors start after quarantine | News Article

The toll in the number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in the North West has jumped up to 70 from 64 on Sunday night with only 28 recoveries and one death reported.

This also means that so far the province has about 41 active cases of Covid-19 and one reported death while over a million people have been screened.

On Monday, 13 out of 217 Cuban doctors, including family physicians, epidemiologists, biologists and others assigned to help South Africa deal with this pandemic, will start their respective duties. At least five medical personnel working in the public and private sector in the province have recently tested positive for the virus and this includes three doctors and a professional nurse in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, which includes Potchefstroom. These doctors have since recovered from the virus while the province's Covid-19 tracing team is still in the process of identifying and tracing possible Covid-19 contacts.

More than 10 of the 41 active Covid-19 patients have been hospitalised in the province. The provincial Department of Health in the province on Sunday 17 May announced that "during the data harmonisation process, upon further investigation, one case in Rustenburg was reallocated to the Limpopo province."

The department said a total of 935 contacts were identified and 81% (765) of them were traced while 466 contacts completed the 14-day monitoring period. "The total number of screenings in the province is 1 935 315 and 1 785 people showed Covid-19 symptoms and they were referred for testing," the department said.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Sunday night announced that the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa now stands at 15 515 after 1160 new cases were recorded. Mkhize announced that the total number of deaths is 264 and the total number of recoveries is 7006.
