NCOP concludes visit to NC | News Article

The Northern Cape review of the 1994 Women's Charter for Effective Equality led by the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Sylvia Lucas, will hold its last session this week at the Namakwa District.

This virtual session is set to take place on Wednesday and is expected to shed light on the challenges experienced by women in this district.

Lucas last week confirmed to OFM News the high unemployment rates, crime and lack of basic services are amongst some of the key issues raised by women in large parts of the province. She said parliament has also taken note of the escalating cases of gender-based violence in the province and how women still need to fully participate in the economy. Following the review session in this last district, the NCOP will then move to the Free State where they will engage with women in the Mangaung Metro Municipality on Friday.

Lucas has highlighted that they are aiming to interact with women from 40 districts across the country by the end of August.

OFM News previously reported that the nationwide review of the 1994 Women’s Charter is to enable women in different parts of the country to make their voices heard, to enable them to highlight challenges they are still faced with 26 years post democracy and to enable parliament to make amendments.
