The state funeral request for the late Free State Stars chairman, Mike Mokoena, has been granted by the president, Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Free State government spokesperson, Setjhaba Maphalla, confirms that the funeral is declared as a Special Official Funeral Category 2.

He says the president has instructed that the national flag must fly at half-mast at all government buildings in the province on the day of the funeral. He also says Ramaphosa requested that the conditions for the funeral comply with the maximum number of 50 people as per the regulations of the coronavirus lockdown. Mokoena will be laid to rest in Bethlehem on Friday 26 June. He passed on earlier last week, on 17 June 2020, at the age of 68 after a long battle with cancer.

The premier, Sisi Ntombela, welcomed the decision of the president. She states that Mokoena served the Free State and football fraternity with the highest level of dedication and commitment. OFM News previously reported that the provincial government has lodged a request for a state funeral for Mokoena. Ntombela and other members of her cabinet visited his family to convey their condolences and show support to the family, relatives and friends of Mokoena late last week.
