#CoronavirusNW: Spotlight on hospitals | News Article

Several hospitals designated for treating coronavirus patients in the North West will this week come under scrutiny.

This as Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, on Monday to Thursday is set to place major Covid-19 measures in the spotlight as Covid-19 cases continue to surge in the province.

His oversight visit will interrogate five crucial factors which include workplace compliance, medicine availability, personal protective equipment (PPE) availability, and beds availability. This oversight visit will also check on a list and status of staff infected by Covid-19 and seek to interpret it. OFM News previously reported about a number of doctors, nurses and patients, amongst others, who were infected by the virus which has so far killed at least 36 patients.

The department says another batch of 503 new Covid-19 infections has been recorded in the province in the last 24 hours. This takes a total number of confirmed cumulative cases in the province to 9924.

Furthermore, the visit by Sambatha to various hospitals in the province comes a few days after a councillor in Matlosana, which include Klerksdorp, this past weekend complained about Tshepong Hospital which is situated at Jouberton near Klerksdorp.

The councillor criticised the hospital for not adhering to social distancing and a lack of professionalism, amongst others. This emerged from the audio which has been widely shared across all social media platforms by this councillor.

In the audio directed to the hospital manager, the councillor criticised the hospital for not practising social distancing amongst staff and patients and also spoke about the lack of professionalism or the lack of sensitivity from healthcare workers toward Covid-19 patients. But in a detailed response to these allegations, the hospital management brushed off these claims and branded them as untrue.

Meanwhile, hospitals which will be visited are Brits, Moses Kotane, JST, Ventersdorp, Taung, Vryburg, Schweizer-Reineke, Gelukspan and Mafikeng.
