Bank statements link suspects to series of offences | News Article

Two suspects believed to be part of a crime syndicate were arrested in the North West on charges of fraud and the possession of a stolen vehicle.

According to a SAPS statement, the suspects are currently on bail and are expected to reappear in court on 7 September 2020. Equal Siyakula Zitha (19) and Kamogelo Makua (20) were arrested on Tuesday 21 July 2020 in Phola, Mpumalanga, for fraudulent deals that were committed on Monday 20 July 2020 at a car dealership in Klerksdorp. Investigations that were conducted in conjuction with Wesbank, indicated that Makua and Zitha were linked in fraudulent cases dating from November 2018 until March 2020.

"Further investigations,in conjunction with Wesbank, linked Makua to five fraudulent vehicle purchase transactions, including the Ford Ranger found in possession of Zitha. The other two transactions were conducted in Vereeniging and Pretoria respectively. It was also established that the format of the salary advisories and bank statements used by the suspects were possibly linked to a syndicate operating from Phola. Several cases were registered as fraudulent transactions between November 2018 and March 2020 in Witbank, Boksburg, Lydenburg, Sandton, Burgersfort, Whiteriver and Nelspruit", the statement from SAPS added.

It's also believed that the suspects had awarded stolen vehicles to family members after a relative of Zitha was found with a suspected stolen vehicle, which was seized upon arrival at court proceedings.
