ANC reinstates FS mayor with conditions─── MARVIN NTSANE 09:57 Fri, 07 Aug 2020
The suspended Free State executive mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Nkosinjani Speelman, will resume his duties as mayor on Friday after he was reinstated by the ANC National Disciplinary Committee.
This comes after he was suspended and banned from the party by the ANC provincial disciplinary committee earlier this year for using the derogative word "boesmans" when he was referring to the coloured community of Bronville in Welkom during his welcoming of the South African National Defence Force members to the city, to enforce the national coronavirus lockdown regulations.
The ANC provincial spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, says Speelman appealed his suspension and thus the matter was handled by the party's national disciplinary committee. He adds that the national disciplinary committee found Speelman guilty but says the decision to suspend and ban him was too harsh. He further says the committee has on Thursday overturned the decision and reduced his punishment.
"The committee handed down a punishment of Speelman forfeiting one-third of his salary for three months. That money will be donated to a non-profit organisation (NPO) in Bronville. He will further be subjected to the ANC's OR Tambo Political School where he will be taught about the content of non-racialism. He has also been called upon to apologise to the people of Bronville [on public platforms]," Meeko says.
Speelman's was found guilty by the ANC provincial disciplinary committee earlier after a video of him making the derogative speech circulated on social media causing an uproar in the Bronville community.
