A 34-year-old man is expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates' Court in the North West on Wednesday on a charge of dealing in drugs.

This follows after a major drug bust of dagga worth R2.2 million was made on the R30 road between Klerksdorp and Orkney on Tuesday. The provincial police spokeswoman, Adele Myburgh, confirms that the police arrested the suspect who was shipping the dagga during a roadblock held by the police and members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Provincial Traffic officers. She explains that the suspect was driving a vehicle with a Lesotho registration number when he was pulled off.

Myburgh says during the search the police found bags of dagga in the boot, on the back seat, and in the spare wheel compartment. She says the suspect was immediately arrested.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, lauded all members involved for their efforts. He said that drug peddling, especially dagga, is becoming a real challenge in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District and that the police will ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.
