With Women’s Month drawing to an end, calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa to deal with gender-based violence (GBV) are mounting.

Ramaphosa on Thursday in the National Assembly (NA) sitting had to answer questions relating to the government’s intervention when it comes to abuse against women, amongst others.

Opposition parties and social media users have expressed their concerns with how the judiciary system and the police have been dealing with cases of abuse against women and children, calling for Ramaphosa to take more decisive action.

Meanwhile, the police in the Free State have embarked on an awareness campaign regarding gender-based violence. Police officers in Bothaville, together with Traffic Officers, have embarked on this campaign as part of Women’s Month celebrations and are taking to the streets, local clinics, and various institutions to educate members of the public on measures they could take to report such cases.

OFM News recently reported on an increase in child abuse cases and gender-based violence in the province amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an exclusive interview with OFM News, the SAPS' Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit’s (FCS) Thembi Lebitsa revealed that the number of child abuse cases and domestic violence has shockingly increased in the province with the country being in a lockdown. Lebitsa said they are seeing more and more cases of child neglect, abuse, and rape.

Lebitsa says more needs to be done urgently to stop the cycle of abuse, neglect and the exploitation of children and called on communities to join hands with the police to report cases and protect the most vulnerable members of society.
