The North West provincial government confirms the number of positive coronavirus (Covid-19) cases now stands at 25 816, with 20 554 recoveries.

Health MEC Madoda Sambatha says although the recovery rate now stands at 79.6 % and they are making progress in flattening the curve, there remains a high need for all residents to continue adhering to Covid-19 safety measures.

The mining areas of Rustenburg, and Madibeng in the Bojanala District, as well as Matlosana in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, remain hotspots.

Sambatha has assured the public that his department is still hard at work ensuring that healthcare facilities are equipped with sufficient infrastructure, adequate staff, adequate medicine and supplies to strengthen their fight against the spread of Covid-19.

Sambatha's statement comes just days after Health Minister Zwell Mkhize reiterated that the threat of a resurgence in Covid-19 infections remains, even with the notable decline in daily infections.

Mkhize has warned that the threat of a second wave remains high and urged all South Africans to continue observing Covid-19 health protocols such as social distancing, wearing of masks, frequent sanitising and washing of hands.

The South African Medical Association has also warned that a second wave of Covid-19 should be expected.
