#CoronavirusFS: Opposition raises concern over water─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:46 Sun, 06 Sep 2020
Calls are mounting for the Free State Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Thembeni Nxangisa to address the non-payment of water boards.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State Legislature says the non-payment of Bloem Water by Kopanong Local Municipality has left residents without water, and calls on Nxangisa to take action.
The municipality, which is more than R390 million indebted to Bloem Water, is one of many Free State municipalities battling to settle their water board debts.
The party's MPL, Karabo Khakhau, in a statement says it is appalling that residents of this municipality and other towns in the Xhariep District are still grappling with access to water amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Khakhau says the time has come for Nxangisa to intervene and address the water crisis faced by these communities.
"This is incredibly alarming considering that the world is faced with a Covid-19 pandemic that requires residents to wash their hands regularly," she highlighted.
She added that the disruption of water supply in Kopanong affects the operation of the Jagersfontein and Trompsburg Hospitals as water reserves become depleted.
