#CosatuNationalStrike: Premier, NPA to receive demands─── ELSABÉ RICHARD 11:53 Wed, 07 Oct 2020
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the SA Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) have on Wednesday taken a stand together.
Cosatu together with unions such as the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) are set on Wednesday to hand over a memorandum of demands to Free State premier Sisi Ntombela.
The provincial secretary of Cosatu, Monyatso Mahlatsi, told OFM News that their memorandum consists of four demands. He explained these demands highlight key issues such as corruption, the high level of unemployment in the province, as well as the increase of gender-based violence (GBV) in communities.
Furthermore, Mahlatsi states that they are appealing to Ntombela to act against individuals against whom there are allegations of corruption. "We're calling on our community to act against gender-based violence because we cannot live in a society that is very violent against itself," added Mahlatsi.
He alluded that another key issue listed in the memorandum includes a call for employers to respect collective bargaining.
Furthermore, Mahlatsi expressed that the purpose of the memorandum is to appeal to Ntombela to act against individuals who are accused of corruption.
He also adds that they will be handing over a memorandum to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), as well as the Hawks, calling on them to "up their game in terms of prosecution" and to hold those accountable who are implicated in corruption.
OFM News recently reported that thousands of South Africans are expected to take to the streets on Wednesday in a bid to get the government to listen to their grievances and demands.
