A Northern Cape man was handed down a hefty sentence of 24 years imprisonment in the Port Nolloth Regional Court after he was initially charged with attempted rape, housebreaking, sexual assault, housebreaking and theft.
The South African Police Service in the province welcomes the sentencing of Paulus Pienaar (37) after he, on two separate incidents, gained entrance into the 39-year-old victim’s shanty in Sandriff, Alexander Bay. On both incidents on 12 April 2019 and 21 June 2020, the convict was unsuccessful with the attempted rape and assault, with the victim being able to flee the scene.
"On Count 1 - attempted rape - Paulus Pienaar was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment; on Count 2 - housebreaking with the intent to rape - he received 3 years imprisonment; Count 3, sexual assault - 7 years imprisonment; and Count 4, housebreaking and theft - 4 years imprisonment. Pienaar received a total of 24 years imprisonment’," said police spokesperson Sergio Kock.
Pienaar was also declared unfit to possess a firearm during his sentence on 23 October 2020.
The Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Brigadier Nicky Mills, commended WO Ulrich Aitken and WO André Swanepoel from Port Nolloth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for their commitment and dedication in the two cases. Protecting our women and children still remains one of the Priorities of the SAPS, said Mills.
