NW Commissioner issues crime warning─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:09 Thu, 19 Nov 2020
A stern warning has been sent to residents of Ganyesa and Morokweng near Vryburg in North West.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena, urges community members in the province to refrain from any form of criminal activity and appeals to them to continue reporting crime. This, after he welcomed a life imprisonment term handed down to 26-year-old Reabaka Alphius Baikepi by the Ganyesa Regional Court - in connection with the rape of an elderly woman.
Kwena warns no stone will be left unturned in the fight against crime in the province and that the police will be intensifying their efforts against any criminal activities as the country nears the festive seasons. His statement highlights that the 26-year-old is facing the full might of the law for a crime he committed back in 2017.
The accused was arrested at his home in Morokweng near Vryburg in 2019 after DNA results linked him to the incident and has been in custody since his arrest.
"Baikepi’s sentencing emanates from his arrest on Saturday 5 January 2019, for the rape of a 76-year-old granny at Selosesha section, Morokweng. The elderly woman was sleeping alone at her residential place on Monday 3 April 2017, when the accused broke the window to gain entry.
"Baikepi covered the granny’s mouth with his hands to prevent her from screaming for help and raped her. Afterwards, he locked the victim's bedroom, took the key and fled from the scene."
Kwena has reiterated that the police take crimes against women and children seriously and is hopeful that the sentence will serve as a warning to all the criminals out there.
