Millions go to NC housing | News Article

The Northern Cape has welcomed R200 million from the national Human Settlements Department to address its housing challenges.

Following Minister Lindiwe Sisulu's visit to the province, challenges regarding housing backlogs and the mushrooming of informal settlements in the province came to the forefront - prompting her to allocate more funds to the province.

Similar housing issues, coupled with the lack of water and adequate sanitation in many parts of the province, were recently also brought to the attention of Parliament when members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) engaged women from all five districts regarding the Women's Charter for Effective Equality review sessions.

The sessions, led by Chairperson Sylvia Lucas, who is also the former Premier of the Northern Cape, shed light on challenges experienced by women in this province 26 years post-democracy. The lack of housing, water and sanitation were some of the issues sharply raised by the women in the province who state that more needed to be done urgently.

OFM News has previously reported that issues regarding high unemployment rates, lack of economic opportunities, crime, and a lack of basic services were amongst challenges raised by the women in the Northern Cape.

Meanwhile, Premier Zamani Saul has taken to his social media platforms to express gratitude over the funds availed by Sisulu for Human Settlements, stating that it "will definitely bolster our capacity to deliver more houses and serviced sites in the province".
