#UFS students not backing down─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:23 Tue, 08 Dec 2020
Students at the University of the Free State (UFS) have vowed to render the institution ungovernable if their demands are not met - saying they will again gather at campuses on Tuesday.
This, as they embarked on protests against the non-payment of NSFAS funds on Monday. The students, represented by SRC president Katleho Lechoo, voiced their concerns, stating that they will continue making their demands heard and gather at the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa main campus gates until management responds to their demands.
Lechoo told OFM News' Blaine Jones they are demanding for the immediate payment of meal allowances and accommodation for students that are studying through NSFAS.
They have threatened to shut down the campus if their demands are not met, stating that they want their NSFAS food allowances and accommodation to be paid as soon as possible, seeing as the academic year has been extended until January.
Meanwhile, the university has in a statement outlined that it is not in the position to meet the demands of the SRC to pay allowances to cover meals and personal expenses of NSFAS students who already completed online or face-to-face examinations earlier this year.
"Regarding communication with private landlords, the university is committed to assist students who are still writing online or face-to-face examinations and who may be experiencing problems with their private accommodation or face eviction by landlords," said the university.
The institution has further condemned the disruption of the examinations stating that it will take disciplinary action against students who intend doing so.
