Death in police custody high in NC | News Article

The Northern Cape has recorded an increase in the number of detainees who kill themselves in police custody.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) most provinces in the country experienced a decrease in the number of suicide victims in police custody, except the Northern Cape, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

The 2019/20 IPID annual report indicates that increasing cases of death in police custody and death as a result of police action is a great concern.

The report indicates death as a result of police action stood at 62 % countrywide while death in custody stood at 38%, with the highest increases recorded in Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape.

OFM News previously reported that cases of assault by the police in these provinces and others is seen as a major concern.

The directorate’s report indicates most cases laid against the police are for assault, with 235 cases laid in the Northern Cape and 226 in North West.

The report showed that the highest number of cases against the police for assault were recorded in the Western Cape, followed by Gauteng and KZN.
