Two NW officers wounded in robbery─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:56 Tue, 05 Jan 2021
The North West police have launched a 72-hour activation plan in pursuit of four suspected robbers who shot and wounded two police officers in Rustenburg.
Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says the four (gun-wielding) suspects robbed a supermarket of an undisclosed amount of cash in Rustenburg on Monday. The suspects, who were also wearing masks, are alleged to have entered the store and robbed the cashiers at gunpoint.
Mokgwabone says when the suspects fled the supermarket they spotted and disarmed a police officer who was about to enter the store. He adds it’s alleged these suspects fired several shots towards the Rustenburg Flying Squad vehicle which was in the parking area and as a result, a sergeant and a warrant officer sustained hand and arm gunshot wounds.
“The suspects subsequently fled from the scene driving in a silver Volkswagen Polo vehicle. The two injured officers were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Consequently, one was treated and discharged while another was admitted for further treatment.” The police say there has not been a report of any injury suffered by bystanders.
The 72-hour Activation Plan includes the deployment of Crime Intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Forensics, Detective Services and other units.
“Investigation into the matter is underway and we are appealing to anyone who may have any information regarding the incident to contact Captain Tyson Ndlovu of the Hawks on 071-481-2867 or call SAPS on the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Tip-offs can also be communicated via the My SAPS App,” Mokgwabone alludes.
