Education MEC Tate Makgoe paid a visit to three marking centers, of which one was the Grey College marking centre in Bloemfontein, where he officiated all marking on Thursday.

A total of 23 marking centres for matric exam papers have officially been opened in the Free State on Wednesday.

In total 2128 markers have been briefed and are set to commence marking on Thursday afternoon. Some 442 assistant teachers have been appointed to assist where necessary.

The Free State Education Department confirmed that teachers who were appointed as markers have not been tested before entering the facility. Mobile clinics will, however, be deployed at testing centres should a marker test positive for Covid-19 during the duration of the marking.

Strict screening is applied at all centres across the province. Makgoe also ensured matriculants that reserve markers have been secured in case some of the markers test positive or need to self-isolate.

In total, 42 teachers in the Free State have died due to COVID-19 complications. Makgoe again thanked all teachers for the effort they have made throughout last year and said every teacher lost is a life too many.

Marking will continue until Thursday 21 January.
