Man behind bars for possession of endangered plants─── 17:35 Wed, 20 Jan 2021
The 55-year-old Kenneth James Hendriks will remain in custody after his first court appearance Wednesday in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court for a charge of being in possession of endangered plants.
He will reappear before the same court next week Wednesday.
The suspect's court appearance emanates from his arrest on Monday, after police received information that Hendriks was travelling on a bus to Gauteng, with an endangered plant species.
The bus was intercepted, the suspect identified and his luggage searched.
The plants (Conophytum), with an estimated value of R80 900, was found and confiscated.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, lauded the police for their quick response, which resulted in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
He also urged members of the community to be the eyes and the ears of the police by reporting suspicious criminal activities.
