Marikana #WaterCrisis under scrutiny | News Article

Water and sanitation issues faced in Marikana in the North West are receiving the necessary attention and are being attended to.

This is according to the Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu.

Responding to questions raised by the EFF over a lack of water supply to the community of Marikana and neighbouring towns, Sisulu has confirmed that her department is working on measures to redress the situation. She, in a written parliamentary reply, said her department has allocated over R12 million to the Rustenburg Local Municipality to implement water infrastructure projects. Sisulu says the Marikana project is almost complete and the residents will soon have a sustainable quality water supply.

Her response to the party comes amidst growing concerns over the lack of basic service delivery in the province with many political parties raising concerns over the state of local government and how the national government still needs to intervene.

“The Marikana Project is being implemented by the Rustenburg Local Municipality and is currently at 90% completion. The Department of Water and Sanitation is monitoring the project through site visits and receives progress reports for its provincial office on a monthly basis.”

Sisulu has further announced that they are expecting the project to reach full completion by March 2021.
