#NCfloods: Municipality watchful─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:02 Thu, 28 Jan 2021
The Local Municipality of Sol Plaatje, which include Kimberley in the Northern Cape, is keeping a watchful eye around areas of Greenpoint, Galeshewe, and Riverton amidst the heavy rain.
According to the municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie, during the level 4 alert of heavy rain, 20 Ritchie residents had to be temporarily accommodated at a church shelter for the night following the floods in that area.
Matsie says the residents received assistance with mattresses and blankets. He adds that no further reports of damage have been received by the emergency and social services.
“Everything was done to ensure adherence to COVID-19 regulations and procedures. They received mattresses and blankets,” Matsie adds.
Meanwhile, residents of Kathu in the Northern Cape Local Municipality of Gamagara were urged to visit and assess the state of graves following heavy rain in that area.
This after the continuous collapse or falling of graves at the new cemetery in Kathu due to the heavy rain. The damage to the graves was exacerbated by the flooding.
