NW prepares sites for vaccination | News Article

A total number of 21 vaccination sites have been identified in the North West in anticipation of the arrival of the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines in South Africa on Monday.

This is according to premier Job Mokgoro, who briefed the media on the vaccine rollout plan on Monday. He says these sites are in their final stages of preparation with compliance checking of the sites currently underway. He says they have ensured that vaccination sites can administer 500 doses per day - 10 doses per vial, 50 vials per box. Mokgoro says a box must be used on the same day it is opened as the vaccine is light-sensitive.

“Vaccination site curators have also been appointed and staff pre-registration commenced on 21 January. Facility-based vaccination of personnel at health facilities and establishments will be done in the following phases that are informed by the risk of exposure - Phase 1: High-risk units, Phase 2: Medium-risk units, and Phase 3: Low-risk units,” he adds.

The province is set to vaccinate about 34 000 healthcare workers, including nurses and doctors. “We have ensured the training of our human resources and this included supervision once we begin the vaccinations. Vaccinators have been allocated and are undergoing training," Mokgoro adds.

Meanwhile, the medical specialist, Professor John Tumbu, previously indicated that at least 23 000 healthcare practitioners from the public sector and 11 000 from the private sector, including specialists, doctors, and nurses will be targeted for the first phase of the vaccination.

“We are in the process of adding healthcare providers and in this new group is the traditional healthcare practitioners. We are in the process of collecting data on the traditional practitioners that will be added to the 34 000 healthcare workers we have and that will be the number we are targeting in terms of dealing with phase 1,” Tumbu added.
