Police spokesperson, Luvuyo Poni, says the postmaster was met by an unwelcoming scene and fumes of a grinder when he reported for duty with his colleagues on Friday. Poni says they called the police when they noticed that the private parcel counter was tampered with as its security gate was blocking the door from opening.

He further confirms upon arrival the police investigated the scene and discovered that the door to the strongroom was opened and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from the safe.

No arrests have been made as yet and investigations continue.

The robbery in De Aar happened just days after the police in the province sent a stern warning against any form of criminality in the province following the arrests they made in Springbok.

Five suspects were nabbed and are expected to appear before the local magistrate's court soon.

This, after they were arrested following an armed robbery in Springbok.
