NW municipality elects new mayor─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:03 Tue, 16 Feb 2021
ANC councillor Lydia Duiker, in Lekwa-Temane which include Bloemhof in the North West, has reportedly been elected as the new mayor of the local municipality. Duiker's election has reportedly been uncontested by council members.
Her election comes after the embattled mayor, Mpho Pilane, was accused of rape, sexual assault and the abduction of two minors in Delareyville in 2020. He resigned on Tuesday with immediate effect ahead of a motion of no confidence by the political party Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD).
Pilane’s resignation was confirmed by the Interprovincial Committee (IPC) coordinator, Hlomane Chauke, on Tuesday.
Reacting to the resignation of Pilane, the area's F4SD councillor, Lenyatso Legabe, says they welcome his resignation.
“F4SD herein reiterates a call for all North West mayors implicated in wrongdoing to voluntarily resign,” Legabe adds.
Pilane’s resignation also comes a few days after the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) adopted a step-aside policy which was suggested at the party’s 54th national conference.
Chauke said the IPC is encouraged by Pilane’s decision and his cooperation in carrying out the instructions of the committee.
