#AsbestosGate: Streets closed ahead of Magashule's court appearance─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:00 Fri, 19 Feb 2021
Two busy streets leading to the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court in the Mangaung Metro Municipality in the Free State will be closed on Friday, ahead of the ANC Secretary-General (SG) Ace Magashule's court appearance.
Magashule and nine other suspects, including former Mangaung Metro Municipality Mayor Olly Mlamleli, are amongst others facing charges of fraud and corruption relating to the failed R255 million asbestos project.
The municipality's spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, tells OFM News that President Brand Street, which is between President Boshoff and St Andrews, will be closed for traffic.
St George Street, between Markgraaff and West Burger Streets, will also be closed for traffic as thousands of Magashule and Mlamleli supporters are set to picket outside the court.
In 2020 the metro also closed streets leading to the court following a large contingent of supporters picking outside the court in support of Magashule.
Meanwhile, those expected to stand in the dock include the CEO of Blackhead Consulting, Edwin Sodi, as well as the former Free State Human Settlements Head of Department, Nthimotse Mokhesi, and former National Director-General Thabane Zulu, amongst other government officials.
They stand accused of looting funds that were earmarked to see the assessment, audit and removal of asbestos roofs in the province in 2014 when the housing tender was awarded.
The suspects are out on bail ranging from R50 000 to R500 000.
