Officials 'not held accountable in NW'─── LUCKY NKUYANE 13:12 Mon, 22 Feb 2021
The Ad Hoc Committee leading the interventions in the North West, which is under administration, has demanded heads to roll over continued irregular expenditure.
The chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Section 100 Intervention, China Dodovu, says through the years the province had lost billions of rands. From the year 2017/18 to 2018/19, the province had incurred a whopping R7.5 billion in irregular expenditure. Dodovu says the committee is shocked that no-one has been taken to task and faced consequences of their wrongdoings. Dodovu adds that some of the departments in the province had issued tenders worth millions of rands without following the guidelines, thus these resulted in irregular expenditure.
“While the committee acknowledges that since the intervention there has been an appreciated downward trend in irregular expenditure, from R3.8 billion to R2.6 billion, the committee has called for consequence management to discipline those in the wrong and safeguard the resources of the state. Also, the committee welcomes the stabilisation in the financial affairs of the province, but has called for consequence management, which will act as a deterrent against wrongdoing,” he adds.
Dodovu further adds that the committee received a briefing from the National Treasury and the Office of the Auditor-General (AG) on the financial position of the province and audit reports since the intervention.
