The Free State is committed to quality education and ensuring that learners remain top performers.

This is according to the Premier of the Free State, Sisi Ntombela. Addressing learners at the province's Well Done Function, Ntombela has expressed her gratitude towards the Matric Class of 2020. This as the province has maintained the top position in matric results with a pass rate of 85.1%.

Of the five districts in the province, three have made it to the top 10 countrywide. Ntombela announced that she takes pride in that the province has, since 2013, claimed the first position with the exception in 2018 when it came second to Gauteng. Ntombela further appealed to the class of 2021 to raise the bar, stating that they should keep studying hard despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus.

Ntombela has further sent her condolences to the family and friends of teachers and learners who have lost their lives due to the virus. In total, 66 teachers and 4 learners in the Free State have since succumbed to the virus.

"We have made it against all odds. We are proud of our teachers and learners. We are proud of our schools - even those in remote areas, such as farm schools," highlighted Ntombela.

She further announced that the province will continue assisting top-performing learners with bursaries.
