This was revealed by premier Sisi Ntombela during her State of the Province Address (Sopa) on Tuesday morning in the Provincial Legislature in Bloemfontein. Residents, including frontline healthcare workers who are already receiving the doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, will be vaccinated within a 12-month period.

Ntombela says their vaccination target during the first phase is 240 people per day and to date, about 5 224 health care workers have been vaccinated at the Pelonomi and Universitas Hospitals in Bloemfontein.

“This week we are launching three additional vaccine sites, which include the Fezi Ngubentombi Provincial Hospital in Sasolburg, the Bongani Hospital in Welkom, and the Rose Park Hospital in Bloemfontein. Your willingness to get vaccinated is a step closer to recovery and getting the country back to normal.

According to the Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, about 3 250 people in the Free State have died due to COVID-19 complications whilst 70 343 patients recovered from 89 113 total cases in the province. Only 6 520 cases are active in the province.
