Intervention team heads to troubled NW─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 09:59 Mon, 15 Mar 2021
The state of the North West Province and its local government will this week come under scrutiny.
This, as the Ad Hoc Committee on the Section 100 intervention in the North West is set to embark on an oversight visit to the province.
The troubled Mahikeng Municipality, the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital, Ditsobotla, Matlosana as well as the JB Marks Local Municipalities are amongst those expected to be visited. The visit, led by the Chair of the Committee, China Dodovu, comes less than a week since they called for investigations to be fast-tracked and for those implicated in fraud and corruption cases to be brought to book. The committee was last week briefed by the Hawks and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) where it was confirmed that a total of 12 fraud and corruption cases relating to Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) tenders in the province are currently under investigation by the SIU.
During a virtual sitting last week, Dodovu highlighted how the lack of basic service delivery in the province remains a great cause of concern while irregular expenditure is on the rise. He said they would like to see investigations reach completion, and those implicated get prosecuted.
Dodovu, together with the committee, will during the course of this week engage with the provincial government and assess the progress made since President Cyril Ramaphosa placed the entire province under administration in 2018.
Meanwhile, the Inter-ministerial Task Team led by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, which was scheduled to withdraw its intervention in that province at the end of March, has been extended to June 2021 to address outstanding priorities.
