Police Spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the arrests were made on Sunday 21 March following an intervention by the police's Tactical Response Team.

The suspects were arrested on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“The team then followed a crime intelligence-led information on suspects that are coming from Gauteng to Welkom who are in possession of firearms. It was said the alleged suspects are driving a white Hyundai Matrix with a GP registration number. The suspects were traced and intercepted at Chopin Street, in Riebeeckstad, Welkom. The vehicle, as well as four occupants in the vehicle, were searched and two unlicensed firearms, a point (.) 38 special revolver and a 9mm pistol with serial numbers filed off, were found and confiscated,” adds Makhele.

Makhele says the suspects are from various areas in the Gauteng province.
