Suspected fraudsters due in Kimberley Court | News Article

The Northern Cape Hawks have arrested three more suspects who allegedly defrauded the Kimberley-based Sol Plaatje Municipality of approximately R1,6 million.

This means that the Hawks in the province have thus far nabbed six suspects in total, including municipal officials. They are set to appear in court on Thursday 25 March to face charges of fraud and money laundering, amongst others. First, three suspects were apprehended on Wednesday morning in Kuruman and the others were later arrested in Kimberley.

The Hawks' provincial spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says it’s alleged that between 2011 and 2016, ghost workers were created in the Sol Plaatje municipality's database. Mnisi says during the alleged crime, various bank accounts were used to transfer money from Sol Plaatje’s bank account, amounting to the said money.

“All suspects are detained at the Kimberley police cells and they are expected to make their first appearance in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Thursday 25 March 2021. More arrests are imminent,” she adds.
