N8 into Kimberley temporarily shut down by protesting residents─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 11:31 Thu, 25 Mar 2021
The N8 road leading to Kimberley in the Northern Cape was on Thursday morning temporarily barricaded with varying objects by protesting residents, halting traffic into the city.
Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergio Kock, tells OFM News, the situation has since quietened down and reports indicate the N8 is now open for traffic.
A businessman in the city, who spoke to OFM News on the basis of anonymity, says his employees sent him messages with images in the morning regarding the unrest in the city. The pictures showed residents had barricaded the road with burning tyres and stones. Kock says the protest action was related to service delivery challenges. The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality spokesperson, Sello Matsie, is yet to respond to media queries on the matter. On Wednesday, the DFA reported that heavy rainfall had thwarted angry Roodepan residents' protest action. It’s alleged, the municipality is yet to come back to the residents regarding their service delivery concerns.
This is a developing story.
