The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the Free State says it respect any decision taken by the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC), but it won’t stand against protests in support of embattled ANC Secretary-General (SG) Ace Magashule and others.

This follows a call by the NEC that party members who are facing serious charges in court - including Magashule and Member of Parliament (MP), Bongani Bongo – have 30 days to step aside or face suspension from the party.

ANCYL spokesperson Sello Pietersen says the youth in the province remains disciplined and respect resolutions taken during the national conference in 2017.

But, he says, party members have the right to express support for Magashule. This follows indications that Magashule’s allies are planning a national down over the call that he should step aside.

“Members of the ANC in their own right have their own thinking in terms of what it is that they want to do. If members of the ANC at large decide that they want to march in support of the SG, the Youth League can never stand against that issue - because the SG was elected by the conference as the SG of the ANC in the Country,” he adds.

He says if there are comrades who feels that the SG must be supported, for whatever reason, the youth league will never be opposed to that issue .

“We can never stop our members in their own individual capacity to go and form part of a march, or to support the SG or any leader of the ANC,” Pietersen further adds.
